In Patiya, Chattogram, sacked officers and employees of six banks staged a blockade, disrupting the operations of 25 banks for at least four hours. The protesters, previously employed by banks under the control of the S Alam Group, were demanding reinstatement of their jobs.
On Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the demonstrators blocked the entrances of the banks, preventing customers from entering and halting transactions and other services. They also briefly blocked the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway and restricted access to ATM booths. Holding banners with slogans demanding the restoration of their jobs, the protesters continued their agitation until 1 p.m.
Local journalist Abdul Hakim reported that around 12:30 p.m., Patiya Upazila Executive Officer Farhanur Rahman and police officials engaged in discussions with the protesters. Following assurances that their demands would be forwarded to the relevant authorities, the demonstrators lifted the blockade, and banking operations resumed by 1 p.m.
The protest stems from the dissolution of the boards of six banks—Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, and Union Bank—by Bangladesh Bank after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, following a mass uprising. After new boards were formed, many employees hired during the S Alam Group’s control were sacked.
The sacked employees allege that residents of Chattogram, particularly those from Patiya, were specifically targeted and dismissed without notice, leaving around 7,000 workers unemployed. Many, having crossed the age limit for new employment, face bleak prospects. They demand reinstatement to their positions.
Patiya Upazila Executive Officer Farhanur Rahman stated, “Considering the inconvenience to customers, we requested the protesters to clear the bank entrances. They initially moved from Sonali Bank and gradually lifted the blockade from other banks as well.”
Additional Superintendent of Police (Patiya Circle) Ariful Islam said, “The protesters briefly occupied the highway but later dispersed on their own.”
