Section 144 Imposed in Chittagong University Area Following Clashes*

A clash broke out between students of Chittagong University and local residents today at noon near Jobra village, adjacent to the university’s No. 2 gate. The incident was triggered when a security guard of a rented house allegedly assaulted a female student. Following the clash, the Hathazari Upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the Chittagong University area, effective until midnight on Monday. The directive was issued in a notice signed by Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin on Sunday afternoon. Chittagong University falls under the jurisdiction of Hathazari Upazila.

According to the administration’s notice, Section 144 will remain in effect from the eastern side of the No. 2 gate market to the railway gate on both sides of the area. Additionally, gatherings, rallies, protests, or any form of public assembly, as well as the carrying of weapons, are strictly prohibited in the specified area. The notice also restricts the movement of more than five people together in the affected zone.

When contacted, UNO Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin told Prothom Alo that the decision was made to maintain peace and order. The clash began on Saturday night around 12:15 AM and continued until noon on Sunday, involving local residents and students near the No. 2 gate area. During the confrontation, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Uddin, Proctor Professor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif, and at least 180 students were injured. Local residents claim that 10 to 12 people from their side were also injured in the incident.
