A case has been filed in Ishwarganj, Mymensingh, after a teenage girl was attacked with a machete for rejecting a marriage proposal. The case was lodged at Ishwarganj Police Station on Thursday morning by the girl’s family.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night around 9:00 pm at the girl’s home in a village in Ishwarganj Upazila. The prime suspect, Yasin Mia (20), along with five others, has been named in the case. Police report that all suspects are currently absconding.
According to police and local residents, Yasin had been harassing the 15-year-old girl for some time. When he proposed marriage and her family rejected it, he became enraged. On Wednesday night, Yasin entered the girl’s courtyard and attacked her with a sharp weapon. Her screams alerted family members and locals, causing Yasin to flee. The girl was initially taken to the Upazila Health Complex and later admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The victim’s brother told Prothom Alo, “Yasin proposed marriage to my sister, but my father refused. We are poor, and his family is influential. He kept harassing her. We informed the local Union Parishad member, who warned Yasin’s family, but he continued proposing marriage.”
Ishwarganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Obaydul Rahman confirmed that operations are underway to apprehend the suspects.
