Two Arrested for Online Hilsa Fish Sale Scam on Facebook

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest of two individuals, Md. Sifat Molla (25) and Md. Masum Beg (25), for allegedly running a scam involving the sale of hilsa fish on a Facebook page named “Chandpur Ilish Ghat.” The arrests were made by New Market Police Station, as stated in a press release signed by Rahman on Friday, August 8, 2025.

According to sources from New Market Police Station, on July 5, 2025, an individual browsing Facebook near the newspaper sales center at New Market’s Gate No. 1 came across an enticing advertisement for hilsa fish on the “Chandpur Ilish Ghat” page. Attracted by the offer, the individual contacted the suspects via the WhatsApp number provided on the page. After negotiations, the victim transferred money to various numbers provided by the scammers through a mobile banking app to purchase the fish.

The scammers defrauded the victim of two lakh taka. Following the incident, the victim filed a case at New Market Police Station. On Wednesday, Md. Sifat Molla was arrested from Ratanganj Bazaar in Narail Sadar Thana, and on Thursday, Md. Masum Beg was apprehended from Kalia Thana. Police recovered four mobile phones and a SIM card used in the scam from the suspects. Legal action has been initiated against the arrested individuals. (Source: BSS)
