Yunus, Modi, and Shahbaz to Address UN General Assembly on the Same Day

In the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to deliver their speeches on the same day, September 26. The session will commence in New York on September 23.

According to a preliminary schedule shared by senior UN officials, Shahbaz Sharif’s speech is set to follow immediately after Narendra Modi’s address, providing Islamabad with a strategic opportunity to respond directly to New Delhi’s statements, as noted by diplomatic observers.

Pakistan’s high-level delegation, led by Shahbaz Sharif, will include Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Tariq Fatemi. The 80th General Assembly session will officially begin on September 9, with the high-level general debate running from September 23 to September 29. This year’s theme is “Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.” As per tradition, the President of Brazil will deliver the opening address, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who will make his first UN speech since his re-election. On the same day as Shahbaz, Modi, and Yunus, leaders from Israel and China will also speak. Observers believe the consecutive speeches by Shahbaz, Modi, and Yunus will bring South Asian political dynamics to the forefront of the global stage. Analysts suggest that India will emphasize state sovereignty and security, while Pakistan is likely to highlight the Kashmir issue and regional peace. A senior Pakistani diplomat remarked that the world has already witnessed how quickly South Asia can descend into conflict, emphasizing that without a just resolution to the Kashmir issue, the UN’s commitments to peace, development, and human rights cannot be realized in the region. The session is expected to be a busy diplomatic period, with discussions likely to focus on the Israeli war in Gaza, the Ukraine conflict, and the aftermath of tensions along the India-Pakistan border in May. South Asia’s volatility is anticipated to be a key topic on the global stage. The session’s schedule also includes a special climate event on September 24 and a high-level meeting on September 26 to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
