A court in Barguna has rejected the bail pleas of 12 lawyers and ordered their detention in connection with a case involving vandalism and arson at the Barguna district BNP office.
On Tuesday (September 2), Barguna District and Sessions Judge Md. Saifur Rahman issued the order.
The lawyers involved are: former president of the Barguna Bar Association Mahbubul Bari Aslam, Md. Mojibur Rahman, Md. Humayun Kabir, Md. Nurul Islam, Md. Mojibul Haque, Humayun Kabir Paltu, Junayet Hossain Jewel, Abdullah Al Mamun, Imran Hossain, Saimul Islam Rabbi, Abdur Rahman Jewel, and Amirul Islam Milan.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Md. Nurul Amin confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, SM Naimul Islam, son of former Barguna district BNP general secretary SM Nazrul Islam, filed the case at Barguna Police Station on April 30 this year, nearly two years after the incident allegedly occurred on March 17, 2023. He alleged that at around 11 a.m. on that day, a group of 158 leaders and activists, led by Barguna district Awami League president and former MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, general secretary Md. Jahangir Kabir, former MP Golam Sarwar Tuku, and former MP Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon, vandalized and set fire to the district BNP office, causing damages worth approximately Tk 9.45 lakh.
The accused had obtained anticipatory bail for eight weeks from the High Court on July 2 this year and submitted their bail documents to the Barguna District and Sessions Judge Court on July 21. Before the bail period expired, they appeared in the same court on July 24 and applied for bail again. After summoning the case documents, a bail hearing was held on Tuesday. Following the hearing, the court rejected the bail pleas of the 12 lawyers and ordered their detention.
