Advisory Council Approves Drafts of Three Policies; Press Secretary Announces Ban on Election Participation for Those Accused in Crimes Against Humanity Cases

In the 41st meeting of the Advisory Council held at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, on Thursday (September 4, 2025), drafts of three policies were approved. The meeting was chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The approved drafts include the Power Division’s “Policy on Commercial Power Generation/Power Plant Establishment Based on Renewable Energy with Private Sector Participation-2025,” the Posts and Telecommunications Division’s “Telecommunications Network and Licensing Policy-2025,” and the Law and Justice Division’s “International Crimes (Tribunal) (Third Amendment) Ordinance-2025.” These drafts are subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division before final approval.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that the amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal includes provisions to disqualify individuals accused in crimes against humanity cases from participating in elections. The ordinance introduces a new Section 20(C) to the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973. Under this section, individuals formally charged under Section 9(1) will be ineligible to be elected or remain as Members of Parliament. Similarly, such individuals will be disqualified from being elected or serving as members, commissioners, chairpersons, mayors, or administrators of local government or institutions. They will also be ineligible for appointment to public service or holding any public office, in accordance with parliamentary regulations. The press secretary shared these details during a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the afternoon.
