Case Filed Against 1,095, Including Banned BCL Activists, for Attack on Chittagong University Students

Chittagong, September 2, 2025: Chittagong University (CU) authorities have filed a case against 1,095 individuals, including activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in connection with a violent clash between students and local villagers on August 31, which left at least 240 people injured. Additionally, 800-1,000 unidentified individuals have been named as accused in the case.

The case was lodged by Abdur Rahim, Deputy Registrar (security) of CU, at Hathazari Police Station, according to Abu Mohammed Kawsar Hossain, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the station. The First Information Report (FIR) specifically names 95 individuals. The OC stated, "The university administration filed an attempted murder case regarding the attack on students with sharp weapons. The police have registered the case and initiated an investigation, but no arrests have been made so far."

While the OC did not disclose the political affiliations of the accused, sources from the campus and police confirmed that the FIR includes names of local Jubo League and BCL leaders and activists. The clashes, which occurred in two phases, were triggered by an alleged assault on a female student on Saturday night, escalating into widespread violence on Sunday, August 31. At least 240 individuals were injured during the confrontations between students and villagers.
