Dhaka University Student Ali Husen Suspended for Six Months Over Rape Threats

Dhaka, September 3, 2025: Dhaka University (DU) authorities have suspended Ali Husen, a student of the sociology department, for six months for making offensive remarks and issuing rape threats against a female student on Facebook. The decision was announced in a press release issued by Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, acting director of the DU public relations office, following the recommendation of a probe committee formed by the proctor’s office.

According to the press release, Ali Husen used abusive language and threatened a female student on social media, prompting the university to take disciplinary action. The complaint against him has also been referred to the university’s anti-sexual harassment cell for further investigation.

The incident is linked to an earlier controversy involving BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate for the Liberation War and Democratic Movement post in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) elections, representing the left-leaning panels Oporajeyo ’71 and Odommo ’24. Fahmida had filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the nomination of SM Farhad, a general secretary candidate from the Islami Chhatra Shibir-led panel Oikkoboddho Shikharthi Jote (United Student Alliance). On September 1, the High Court issued a stay on the Ducsu election process until October 30, but the Appellate Division’s chamber court overturned the stay order within an hour. Following this, Ali Husen posted a Facebook status threatening to organize a “march for gang rape” against Fahmida, sparking widespread outrage.
