Dhaka University Student Threatened with Gang Rape for Filing Writ; Abdul Kader Demands Severe Punishment

Dhaka, September 2, 2025: Abdul Kader, a vice-president (VP) candidate of the "Anti-Discrimination Student Council" panel and former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has claimed that Ali Hussen, a Dhaka University student who threatened a female student with gang rape for filing a writ petition against the candidacy of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s general secretary (GS) candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, is associated with Islami Chhatra Shibir. Kader demanded the harshest punishment for the accused during a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon in front of Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University.

Speaking at the press conference, Abdul Kader said, “We don’t understand how someone can still retain their studentship after making such a comment. We demand the maximum punishment for him.” He further stated, “Since August 5, Chhatra Shibir has been engaging in covert politics. They still haven’t disclosed their committees, making it hard to determine who is or isn’t affiliated with Shibir. However, we checked Ali Hussen’s Facebook profile yesterday and found evidence of his association with Chhatra Shibir. Even if they deny it, it’s clear whether he is linked to them or not.”

The female student, a candidate from the "Undefeated 71, Indomitable 24" panel, had filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the validity of the candidacy of SM Farhad, the GS candidate of the Shibir-supported "United Students Alliance" panel. The writ questioned how Farhad, who was previously part of Chhatra League’s committee before August 5, could run as a candidate for the Shibir-backed panel. On Monday, the High Court issued an order suspending the DUCSU election, but the Chamber Court stayed the High Court’s order shortly afterward. Following the High Court’s decision, Ali Hussen, a fourth-year student of the Sociology Department and a resident of Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, posted on Facebook, stating, “Instead of protesting against the High Court, a gang rape march should be held against her first.” This statement sparked widespread outrage. Leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir, however, have denied Ali Hussen’s affiliation with their organization. SM Farhad, the president of Dhaka University’s Chhatra Shibir and the GS candidate, told reporters, “The claim that he is a Shibir leader is false propaganda. We have already filed a written complaint with the Proctor’s Office, urging the university administration to take swift action against him.” Ashrefa Khatun, the assistant general secretary (AGS) candidate of the "Anti-Discrimination Student Council" panel, strongly condemned Ali Hussen’s statement during the press conference. She said, “Since August 5, we have seen women being harassed on social media. After Hasina’s departure, we hoped for a safe and tolerant campus for women, but we are witnessing women facing harassment alongside various social barriers.” Addressing all student organizations, she added, “We urge you to oppose women politically, not through sexual harassment.”
The Dhaka University administration has taken steps to investigate the incident. On Tuesday, the Proctor’s Office announced the formation of a three-member committee to probe the gang rape threat. Additionally, the DUCSU and Hall Union Election Commission has formed a two-member fact-finding committee, according to Prothom Alo
