Doubts Over Elections Will Persist Without Improvement in Situation: Mojibur Rahman

AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Holds Press Conference After Meeting with Chief Adviser

Mojibur Rahman, Chairman of Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, has alleged a lack of coordination between the interim government and law enforcement agencies. He made these remarks during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon following a meeting with the Chief Adviser.

Mojibur Rahman stated that his party clearly raised the issue during the meeting. He emphasized that without improvement in the current situation, the doubts surrounding the upcoming national parliamentary elections among various quarters will not be resolved.

He said, “We observe a significant lack of coordination, firmness, and discipline in the government’s activities. Particularly, in incidents like the injury of Nurul Haq and the events at Chittagong University, we have seen a lack of coordination and control between the government and law enforcement agencies.” Highlighting AB Party’s suggestions to address the weak law enforcement situation, Mojibur Rahman noted that they advised the interim government to hold meetings—both in-person and virtually—with law enforcement agencies, involving members from the field level to senior ranks. They also urged the government head to take firm steps to control the law and order situation. The AB Party also drew the Chief Adviser’s attention to the efficiency of the Election Commission. Mojibur Rahman suggested that experienced individuals, including former government officials with a reputation as returning officers, could be appointed on a contractual basis to manage elections. He opposed the lottery system for administrative reshuffles, recommending changes based on risk assessments and the geographical distance of districts and upazilas. To improve law and order, AB Party proposed forming a coordinated committee at the national, district, and upazila levels involving political parties. Mojibur Rahman said, “This would allow political parties to play a role and reduce the burden on law enforcement agencies to some extent.” He added that the Chief Adviser called for unity among all parties and opinions to address the current crisis.
