Election Commission Finalizes Constituency Delimitation for 13th National Election: Gazipur Gains One Seat, Bagerhat Loses One

The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has published a gazette finalizing the delimitation of 300 parliamentary constituencies for the 13th national election. As part of this process, Gazipur has gained one additional seat, increasing its total to six, while Bagerhat has lost one seat, reducing its total to three.

On Thursday evening, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed to over the phone that the gazette for the delimitation of the 300 constituencies has been published.

Earlier that evening, an EC notification stated that the delimitation of the 300 parliamentary constituencies has been completed, with Gazipur’s seat count increasing by one to six and Bagerhat’s seat count decreasing by one to three. According to EC sources, a specialized committee on constituency delimitation worked on this process in preparation for the 13th national election. On July 30, the EC published a draft of the constituency boundaries. The draft retained the boundaries of 261 constituencies from the 12th national election while making minor adjustments to 39 constituencies. Notably, Gazipur gained one seat, and Bagerhat lost one. The EC allowed stakeholders to submit objections or suggestions regarding the proposed constituency boundaries until August 10. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed reported that a total of 1,893 objections and suggestions were received. By August 10, 1,185 objections and 708 suggestions or recommendations were submitted concerning 84 constituencies across 33 districts. Opinions were received from both supporting and opposing sides. From August 24 to 27, the EC conducted hearings over four consecutive days to address objections and applications related to the proposed constituency boundaries. Following a review, the EC’s Senior Secretary announced that the final list would be published promptly. Accordingly, the gazette with the finalized constituency boundaries was published today.
