Hint at Expanding Tribunals to Expedite Trials of July Killings

Dr. Asif Nazrul, the Law Adviser to the interim government, has indicated that the number of tribunals may be increased to swiftly conclude the trials related to the massacre that took place in July-August 2024. He shared this information on Tuesday (September 2) after visiting the International Crimes Tribunal.

The Law Adviser stated that the trial process is being prioritized to the highest degree. To ensure the swift and effective completion of cases involving the massacre, enforced disappearances, and crimes against humanity during the July-August movement, the number of tribunals may be expanded.

Dr. Asif Nazrul further emphasized, “We are committed to bringing justice for all crimes, including the killings, enforced disappearances, and torture committed by the previous government. Ensuring justice is essential for restoring democracy and the nation’s interests.” During the visit, Housing, Public Works, and Industry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Tajul Islam, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, and other officials from various levels were present. It has been learned that the trial process for cases related to crimes against humanity during the July-August movement is currently underway with full momentum. Formal charges have already been framed, and evidence collection has begun in several cases. The evidence collection for the case against former fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also nearing completion.
Currently, these proceedings are being conducted in Tribunal-1 and Tribunal-2. However, due to renovations in the main building, the trial activities of Tribunal-2 are being held in a temporary tin-shed structure.
