Iran has announced the expulsion of Australia’s ambassador in Tehran, following Australia’s decision to expel Iran’s ambassador over allegations of supporting “anti-Jewish activities.” The move comes days after Australia withdrew its ambassador from Iran.
On Thursday, September 4, 2025, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that Iran had taken reciprocal measures in response to Australia’s “unfriendly actions,” in line with diplomatic norms and international law.
Describing Australia’s recent decision to downgrade diplomatic relations as “unjustified,” Baghaei said, “We do not welcome the reduction of diplomatic ties, as we believe there was no basis or justification for Australia’s actions. This will impact the relations between our two countries.”
Despite the restrictions, Baghaei noted that Tehran’s consular section in Canberra remains active, striving to provide necessary services to Iranian citizens residing in Australia.
He also rejected allegations of anti-Semitism against Iran, calling them “ridiculous and baseless.”
On August 26, 2025, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese claimed that Tehran was involved in two anti-Jewish attacks in Australia. He ordered Iran’s ambassador to Canberra, Ahmad Sadeghi, and three other diplomats to leave the country within seven days.[](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/8/26/iran-vows-reciprocal-action-after-australia-expels-ambassador)
In response, Australia has suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran and urged Australian citizens in Iran to leave as soon as possible if it is safe to do so, pending favorable conditions
