Mexico is keen to enter into a security agreement with the United States to combat drug trafficking and illegal migration but will not accept any form of subordination, declared Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday.
Speaking at an event in Mexico City on Monday, Sheinbaum stated, “We are open to reaching an understanding with the United States, even to signing a security agreement. However, such agreements must be based on responsibility, mutual trust, respect for the sovereignty and integrity of both nations, and cooperation without any form of subordination. We want agreements, not subordination.”
Both the United States and Mexico are North American countries sharing a land and maritime border. For years, this border has been a route for drugs and undocumented migrants entering the US from Mexico.
Recently, the US media outlet Axios reported that the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, is planning military operations inside Mexico to curb the flow of drugs and illegal migrants. This report naturally sparked outrage among Mexico’s government, opposition parties, and various sectors.
Against this backdrop, President Sheinbaum made her statement. She also announced that she would raise the issue of the proposed security agreement during a meeting with US Secretary of State and President Trump’s National Security Advisor, Marco Rubio, who is scheduled to visit Mexico next week.
Notably, President Trump recently accused the Mexican government of failing to take significant steps to curb drug traffickers and human smugglers. He also threatened to impose additional tariffs on Mexico for its alleged “indifference” to these issues.
Claudia Sheinbaum, a former climate scientist, won the 2024 election to become Mexico’s first female president.
