Tk 75 Crore Tax Evasion: Case Filed Against S Alam’s Two Sons, 10 Others

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against 10 individuals, including the two sons of Saiful Alam, the owner of the prominent S Alam Group, and tax officials, for allegedly evading taxes worth Tk 75 crore.

On Wednesday (September 3), ACC Deputy Director Md. Akhtarul Islam disclosed these details.

The accused include Saiful Alam’s sons, Ashraful Alam and Asadul Alam Mahir, along with former Deputy Tax Commissioner Aminul Islam. Additionally, seven officials from Security Islami Bank have been named in the case: Senior Vice President Md. Helal Uddin, Branch Head Muhammad Amir Hossain, former Senior Vice Presidents Md. Ahsanul Haque and Ruhul Abedin, and bank officials Shamima Akter, Md. Anis Uddin, and Gazi Muhammad Yakub. According to the case’s First Information Report (FIR), the accused, in collusion, engaged in criminal misconduct by forging documents and creating fake pay orders. These were used to legitimize Tk 500 crore of undisclosed income. Although they were supposed to pay Tk 125 crore in taxes, they paid only Tk 50 crore, causing a revenue loss of Tk 75 crore to the government. The accused face charges under Sections 409/467/468/471/109 of the Penal Code, along with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. In October of the previous year, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) suspended three senior tax officials for allegedly granting undue benefits to Saiful Alam’s sons in their income tax filings in exchange for bribes. Following this, the ACC initiated an investigation. The Awami League government, from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021, allowed individuals to legalize undisclosed income by paying a 10% tax rate. Sources indicate that, considering the maximum individual tax rate of 25%, Ashraful and Asadul should have paid at least Tk 125 crore for the Tk 500 crore of undisclosed income. However, they legalized the amount by paying only Tk 50 crore.
