Dam on Dashani River Demolished, Relief from Artificial Flooding in Jamalpur

Jamalpur, May 3, 2025 : The two dams constructed on the Dashani River in Dewanganj, Jamalpur, have finally been dismantled, bringing relief to the region plagued by artificial flooding. On Friday, May 2, the dams located in Kharapara of Dewanganj and Airmari of Bokshiganj were demolished in the presence of local residents, resolving the artificial flooding issue caused by the obstructions.

The dismantling of the dams has addressed the artificial problems created by restricted water flow. However, two individuals who attempted to obstruct the demolition were sentenced to six months of imprisonment without labor by a mobile court. The convicted individuals are Rahmat Ali (40), son of Sonar Uddin, and Yusuf Ali (32), son of the late Hasen Ali, both from Char Airmari village.
Local sources revealed that the Dashani River in Kharapara, under Bahadurabad Union of Dewanganj Upazila, faces severe erosion every year. Despite repeated complaints, the district Water Development Board (WDB) took no action. Consequently, locals constructed a dam across the river, blocking the water flow from the eastern side. This led to flooding in low-lying areas of Kamal’s Bartti, Sheikhpara, Khanpara, Bangalpara, Madanerchar, Neelerchar, Kutuberchar, and Chargazirpara villages under Sadhurpara Union in Bokshiganj.
Similarly, residents of Char Airmari in Sadhurpara Union also built another dam on the same river. The two dams disrupted the natural water flow, causing artificial flooding upstream and submerging vast agricultural lands. When efforts to dismantle the dams began on May 1, clashes erupted between residents of the two villages. The mobile court subsequently sentenced two individuals to six months in prison. On Friday morning, the dams were finally demolished, allowing water to flow freely and restoring normalcy in the affected areas.
Abdul Hannan Mondal, a resident of Kamal’s Bartti village, stated, “Every year, this river causes erosion, but the government does nothing. That’s why locals built counter-dams. If the erosion-prone areas are addressed, this problem won’t persist.”
Executive Engineer of the Jamalpur Water Development Board, Md. Nakibuzzaman Khan, said, “The dams caused artificial flooding in the area. After several rounds of discussions with both parties, the dams were demolished. Measures to prevent erosion in the affected areas will be taken soon as per the locals’ demands.”
Jamalpur’s District Administrator Hasina Begum added, “After discussions with both parties, the dams were dismantled. The situation is now under control, and work to prevent erosion will be undertaken based on their demands.”
