International, May 23, 2025 : In a large-scale operation in Malaysia’s Selangor state, the Immigration Department detained 597 undocumented migrants, including Bangladeshis, in a raid conducted late Thursday night (May 22) at Mentari Court, Petaling Jaya.
The operation was confirmed by the Immigration Department’s Deputy Director-General (Operations), Jafri Embok Taha, in a statement issued on Friday morning (May 23).
According to Jafri, the operation involved 390 officers and personnel from various agencies. A total of 1,597 individuals of different nationalities were screened, with 597 found to be without valid documents. The detained migrants, aged between 11 and 59 years, include 472 men and 125 women. The detainees hail from countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Thailand. However, the exact number of Bangladeshi nationals among those detained was not disclosed.
The migrants were detained for offenses including lack of valid identification, overstaying permitted durations, violating pass conditions, and using fraudulent documents. They have been transferred to the Immigration Detention Depot for further investigation and subsequent actions.
Simultaneously, the Petaling Jaya City Council’s Enforcement Division participated in the operation, targeting illegal business activities and the misuse of residential properties. Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohammad Johari Samingon stated that the operation addressed issues such as employing foreigners in unauthorized business premises, using residential properties for commercial purposes, and converting residential spaces into dormitories.
Jafri warned Malaysian citizens against employing or sheltering undocumented migrants, stating that strict action would be taken under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. He further cautioned that individuals, including landlords, who provide shelter to undocumented migrants will face severe penalties.
This operation is part of Malaysia’s intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration, with the government declaring 2025 as the “Enforcement Year” to target immigration law violators.
