Fiji's PM help 26 Bangladeshi for poor living conditions

International desk: In Fiji, 26 Bangladeshi workers have raised concerns about their poor living conditions, prompting immediate action from Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Upon hearing their complaints, he instructed the Minister of Employment and the Minister of Immigration to take necessary measures.

During a recent visit to a supermarket in Fiji’s Central Division, Prime Minister Rabuka met with these workers. They informed him that they do not receive sufficient food, their living conditions are unsatisfactory, and their employment contracts have been violated. Taking their grievances seriously, Rabuka directed ministers to address these concerns and ensure necessary improvements.

Rabuka stated, “No worker should live in conditions that undermine their dignity.” He further emphasized that while abiding by legal requirements is essential, safeguarding workers’ rights is equally important.

Fiji has taken various steps to ensure the well-being of its local workforce. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating discrimination against workers, stating that it is crucial to ensure their basic needs are met.

The Bangladeshi workers reported significant issues such as inadequate food, substandard living conditions, and violations of employment agreements, making it difficult for them to work in Fiji.

According to the Bangladesh Embassy in Australia, approximately 5,000 foreign workers are employed in Fiji, with more than half of them being Bangladeshis. Additionally, workers from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China are also present in the country.
