Nahid Islam Calls for Banishing Awami League’s Boat Symbol from Bangladesh

Dhaka, March 2, 2025: Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has demanded the immediate banning of the Awami League, branding it a "fascist terrorist organization" rather than a political party. Speaking at a rally organized by the NCP at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque on Friday afternoon, Nahid emphasized the need to expel the Awami League’s iconic boat symbol from the country.
Expressing frustration over the interim government’s failure to hold the Awami League accountable, Nahid stated, “It is our collective failure that we must take to the streets to demand the banning of Awami League. The interim government has failed to deliver justice, allowing accused individuals to secure bail and walk free.”
Nahid called for the cancellation of Awami League’s registration and a legal ban on its activities until trials are concluded. He accused the party of subjecting the nation to 16 years of fascism, suppressing public dissent, and undermining Bangladesh’s sovereignty. “Through Mujibism and the 1972 Constitution, they handed Bangladesh over to India, curtailed language rights, and handed the economy to looters,” he alleged.
He further demanded the formation of a constituent assembly through a general election to draft a new constitution. Nahid proposed that the upcoming election should simultaneously elect members for both the national parliament and the constituent assembly.
Addressing journalists, Nahid accused those opposing the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of being “accomplices of the Awami League” rather than true journalists. He also criticized the interim government for failing to honor the martyrs and injured of the July protests.
Nahid raised concerns about the Election Reform Commission’s reluctance to explicitly recommend banning the Awami League, questioning whose interests the Election Commission serves. He urged the creation of a “July Charter” through political consensus, which would explicitly call for the Awami League’s prohibition. To achieve this, he called for the formation of anti-fascist platforms at the grassroots level across the country.
