Record-Breaking Heatwave Grips Bangladesh, No Immediate Relief in Sight

May 9, 2025 :Bangladesh is reeling under an intense heatwave, with maximum temperatures soaring past 41 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi and Chuadanga, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Dhaka, along with most other divisions, is experiencing mild to severe heatwave conditions, with no immediate respite forecast.

The BMD’s latest 120-hour weather bulletin, issued at 6 PM on Friday (May 9), indicates that the heatwave may persist for several days. While there is a possibility of rain in some areas starting May 11, it is unlikely to provide significant relief. The current heatwave is driven by an extended low-pressure system stretching from West Bengal to the northern Bay of Bengal, exacerbating hot and dry conditions across the country.
In Dhaka, the relative humidity has dropped to 37%, intensifying the discomfort. Chuadanga recorded the highest temperature at 41.2°C, followed by Rajshahi at 40.0°C, Khulna at 39.0°C, and Dhaka at 39.2°C. Most parts of the country saw temperatures ranging between 35°C and 37°C.
The BMD predicts scattered showers and thunderstorms in parts of Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions between May 11 and 13. However, these showers are expected to offer only temporary relief, with the heatwave likely to persist in most areas.
