Bangladesh’s First Monorail to be Built in Chittagong, MoU Signed

Chittagong, 02 June, 2025 : Chittagong,  the bustling port city of Bangladesh, is poised to host the nation’s first monorail. The Chittagong City Corporation has initiated this ambitious project to address the city’s escalating traffic congestion.

On Sunday (June 1, 2025), a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the World Trade Center in Chittagong between the Chittagong City Corporation and a joint venture of Germany-based Orascom and Egypt-based Arab Contractors Group. As part of the agreement, the two companies will conduct a feasibility study for the monorail project.

Officials from the Chittagong City Corporation stated that Orascom and Arab Contractors Group have shown interest in financing and implementing the monorail project, prompting the decision to enter into the MoU. According to the implementing agencies, the monorail will span 54 kilometers and feature 32 to 33 stations. Commuters will be able to travel across the city in just 30 to 40 minutes via the monorail.
Transport experts highlighted that the monorail is a state-of-the-art rail system that can be constructed at approximately half the cost of a metro rail. Additionally, it requires significantly less space, making it well-suited for densely populated urban areas like Chittagong. The successful implementation of this project is expected to substantially alleviate the city’s traffic congestion issues.
