Dhaka, June 1, 2025: The International Crimes Tribunal has issued fresh arrest warrants against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal in connection with crimes against humanity during the July-August mass uprising. Another accused, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, has been shown arrested in the case.
On Sunday (June 1), a three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, passed the order. Earlier that morning, formal charges were filed against Sheikh Hasina, and the proceedings were broadcast live on BTV.
On August 5, 2024, the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina collapsed following a mass movement by students and citizens. Subsequently, on August 14, allegations of crimes against humanity were filed against her with the tribunal. The investigation began on October 14, and on May 12, the tribunal’s investigation agency submitted a report against Sheikh Hasina and two others.
Notably, during the anti-discrimination student-citizen movement, the Awami League government was accused of carrying out indiscriminate killings, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,500 people. Following the fall of the government, an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus took charge and decided to reconstitute the International Crimes Tribunal to address the mass killings. On December 17, 2024, the tribunal issued its first arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina. Later, Asaduzzaman Kamal and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who served as Inspector General of Police during the uprising, were also named as accused in the case.
