Wildfire Rages Near Jerusalem, Firefighters Battle to Contain Blaze

A massive wildfire has erupted in a forest near Jerusalem’s Route 1, the main entry point to the city, raising fears of widespread damage. According to The Times of Israel on Thursday, June 26, there are concerns that the fire could spiral out of control, potentially threatening nearby Jewish settlements and forcing the closure of the critical roadway.
The blaze is burning near the Har Hamenuhot cemetery, adjacent to Route 1. Firefighters are working tirelessly to bring the fire under control. The Israel Fire and Rescue Service reported that multiple firefighting aircraft are assisting in the efforts to extinguish the flames. If necessary, additional aircraft may be brought in from abroad. Experts are closely monitoring the situation.
This incident follows a devastating wildfire in May that engulfed Jerusalem’s hilly regions, described by officials as one of the largest wildfires in Israel’s history. During that event, the fire spread to the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, forcing its closure and the evacuation of thousands of residents from nearby areas. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar sought international firefighting assistance, contacting over a dozen countries. With the help of more than 50 firefighter aircraft and ground crews employing advanced techniques, the blaze was eventually brought under control.
Firefighters are currently working around the clock to prevent the fire from spreading further. If the blaze cannot be contained, it could cause significant damage to Jerusalem’s entryway and surrounding areas.
