Canada Visa Scam: Youth Arrested for Swindling Over 82 Lakh Taka in Nilphamari

In Nilphamari’s Kishoreganj, a young man has been arrested by the District Detective Branch (DB) police on charges of defrauding seven individuals of over 82 lakh taka by promising Canadian visas.

The arrested individual, Sheikh Arafat Hossain Lablu Mia (25), hails from the Nitai Kacharipara area of Kishoreganj Upazila.

According to DB and police sources, Lablu Mia and his associates used a Facebook page named ‘Arafat Tours & Travels’ and various IMO numbers to lure victims with promises of jobs and visas in Canada. From March to September 2024, they collected a total of 82.3 lakh taka through bKash by showing fake job offer letters, work permits, and other documents. One of the victims, Mohammad Farhad Sarker (42), a resident of Satkahania village in Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj, stated that he, along with six others, fell prey to this scam. Following complaints, the District Detective Branch conducted a raid in Kishoreganj on Thursday (August 7) morning. Lablu Mia was arrested from his home, and a mobile phone used in the scam was recovered from under a mattress in his bedroom, as per his confession.
Kishoreganj Thana’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Islam told that a case has been filed at Kishoreganj Thana under various sections of the Cyber Security Act.
