Chattogram Doctor Allegedly Attacked for Refusing Extortion, Seeks Help via Facebook Video

In Chattogram’s Bakalia area, a doctor named Iqbal Hossain was reportedly assaulted for refusing to pay extortion money to local criminals. On Tuesday evening, a 36-second video of the doctor pleading for help went viral on Facebook, showing him with blood on his face.

In the video, Dr. Iqbal Hossain, a physician at Ibn Sina Hospital, is heard saying, “I’m Dr. Iqbal. I’m in Puraton Chartala, Bakalia. They’re beating me because I didn’t pay the criminals, including BNP’s Harun. They’re looking for me. I’m hiding in a room. I called 999, but 20-30 minutes have passed, and they haven’t arrived. They’ve taken my nephew and niece. Please save me.”

Police sources confirmed that Dr. Iqbal Hossain, 38, was attacked in the Puraton Chartala area of Bakalia and is currently receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. According to Nurul Alam, in-charge of the Chattogram Medical College Police Outpost, Dr. Iqbal had started construction work on a building near Nur Begum Jame Mosque in Bakalia. A group had been demanding extortion money from him for some time, and his refusal led to the assault by local influential figures.
Dr. Iqbal alleged that the attack was led by a local BNP leader named Harun. Police later rescued him. However, Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikhtiar Uddin told Prothom Alo that no evidence was found linking a BNP leader to the incident. He stated that the altercation arose during a meeting over unauthorized construction, leading to a physical confrontation. The doctor is currently under medical care.
