In Dhaka’s Hazaribagh, a dispute over the payment for a sold auto-rickshaw resulted in the death of a 60-year-old woman named Rowshan Ara. The Hazaribagh Police Station of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.
The arrested individuals are: 1. Mohammad Raju Sheikh (20), 2. Mohammad Fahim (20), 3. Mohammad Saddam Hossain (35), 4. Mohammad Sumon Gazi (36), and 5. Mohammad Rasel (36).
According to Hazaribagh Police Station sources, on July 16, 2025, Rowshan Ara’s daughter, Mst. Runa Akter (32), sold an old auto-rickshaw to Mohammad Fahim, Mohammad Raju, and Mohammad Sumon for Tk 22,000. At the time, they paid Tk 9,000 in cash, promising to settle the remaining amount within two days. However, when they failed to pay the balance, Runa attempted to contact them but was unable to reach them. On Thursday, July 31, 2025, at around 4:00 PM, Runa encountered Raju on a road near the Kalunagar Beribadh garbage depot. When she demanded the outstanding payment, Raju expressed his inability to pay. Runa, along with her tenant Hridoy (30), took two mobile phones from Raju, stating that he could retrieve them after settling the debt.
On July 01, 2025, at around 1:00 AM, the five arrested individuals, along with a former BGB member Abdul Rashid, his brother Abdul Rahman, nephew Abdul Rahim, and 5-6 unidentified persons, entered Runa Akter’s home. Not finding Runa, they attacked her brother Mohammad Liton (38) and mother Rowshan Ara with bamboo sticks, beating them severely.
Upon receiving news of the incident, Runa’s family members rushed to the scene, prompting the assailants to flee. The family managed to apprehend Saddam Hossain and assaulted him. The injured Liton and Rowshan Ara were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Rowshan Ara dead.
Police from Hazaribagh Thana arrived at the scene promptly and arrested the five suspects: Mohammad Raju Sheikh, Mohammad Fahim, Mohammad Saddam Hossain, Mohammad Sumon Gazi, and Mohammad Rasel. A case is currently being filed at Hazaribagh Thana in connection with the incident.
