BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has alleged that a new 'minus-two formula' is being actively pursued to depoliticize Bangladesh by sidelining the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from the political arena, following the Awami League's exit from power. He claims this effort is driven by domestic and foreign entities. In an interview with UNB, Abbas expressed deep concern, stating that certain groups are engaged in a serious conspiracy against Bangladesh's sovereignty and national interests, centered around St. Martin’s Island, Sajek in Khagrachhari, and the New Mooring Container Terminal. He accused some political parties of falling into the trap of these conspirators by attempting to divert the upcoming national election under various pretexts.
Abbas said, "A new minus-two formula has been introduced in Bangladesh’s politics, similar to the one during the 1/11 period. Back then, it was implemented through a military-backed caretaker government. This time, domestic and foreign conspirators are pursuing the same agenda in a different form."
He further alleged that a group is using coordinated social media campaigns and political propaganda to portray BNP as a 'bad' or 'untrustworthy' political force. According to Abbas, some Awami League sympathizers within the administration and certain political and ideological groups are actively working to weaken BNP. They believe that with Awami League’s top leaders abroad, removing BNP from the political scene would hand them control of the country.
"Those who want to keep Bangladesh unstable are the ones trying to implement this new minus-two formula for their own interests," Abbas said. "During 1/11, it came in one form with a military-backed government. Now, with Awami League out of power, a different kind of 'minus-BNP formula' is being executed."
When asked who is behind this, Abbas responded, "The devil comes in many disguises. The same domestic and foreign masterminds are attempting to implement this new minus-two formula."
