Dhaka, May 3, 2025 : The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is making extensive preparations in Sylhet and Dhaka to warmly welcome its Chairperson, Khaleda Zia, who is returning to Bangladesh on May 5, 2025, after a four-month medical treatment in London.
Khaleda Zia will arrive via a regular Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-202), accompanied by her daughters-in-law, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of Tarique Rahman, and Syeda Shamila Rahman, wife of the late Arafat Rahman Koko.
According to BNP sources, the flight will depart from London’s Heathrow Airport at 6:20 PM local time on Sunday, May 4, and land at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport at 9:05 AM on Monday, May 5, after a nearly 10-hour journey. After a one-hour stopover, the flight will proceed to Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, arriving at 10:50 AM.
In Sylhet, BNP leaders, including Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury and Sylhet Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi, expressed their excitement about Khaleda Zia’s arrival. They noted that her presence in the “holy land of Hazrat Shah Jalal and Hazrat Shah Paran” has energized party activists and supporters. BNP leaders have instructed party workers to gather peacefully outside Osmani International Airport to greet their leader, pending her approval for any direct interaction.
In Dhaka, preparations are equally elaborate. A joint meeting of Dhaka Metropolitan BNP and its affiliated organizations, chaired by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was held on May 3 at the party’s Gulshan office to finalize arrangements. Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Khaleda Zia will be received by senior BNP leaders, including members of the standing committee. Her motorcade will proceed from the airport’s Gate 8 to her Gulshan residence, “Firoza,” with party activists lining the streets to offer their greetings.
Security arrangements are being coordinated by retired Major General Fazle Elahi Akbar and retired Brigadier General AKM Shamsul Islam Shams with law enforcement agencies. Khaleda Zia’s eldest son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, will bid her farewell at Heathrow Airport.
Khaleda Zia, who left for London on January 8, 2025, for advanced medical treatment, underwent a 17-day treatment at the London Clinic. She was later monitored by specialists Professor Patrick Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Cross at Tarique Rahman’s residence.
The BNP’s preparations reflect the significance of Khaleda Zia’s return, with party leaders and supporters eagerly awaiting her arrival in both Sylhet and Dhaka.
