In a tragic incident in Jhikargacha, Jessore, the body of a fifth-grade madrasa student, who went missing during an Eid outing, was recovered from a pond a day later. The body was found early Sunday morning (June 8) around 5:30 AM in a pond in Manikali village, Navaron Union.
The deceased, Sohana Akhtar (11), was the daughter of Abdul Jalil from Chandpur village and a fifth-grade student at Baysa Chandpur Dakhil Madrasa. On Saturday (June 7), during Eid-ul-Adha, news of her disappearance surfaced on social media. It was reported that she went missing around 3 PM while visiting the flower-famous Panisara Fulmor area in Gadkhali with her friends. A contact number was shared for anyone with information about her whereabouts.
According to family sources, Sohana had gone to her aunt’s house for the Eid holidays. Despite searches until 2 AM, she could not be found. On Sunday morning, her aunt, uncle, and a neighbor named Mintu spotted her body in a pond behind the aunt’s house and retrieved it. Jhikargacha police subsequently recovered the body.
Sohana’s aunt stated, “Sohana came to our house to play with her cousin, Tawnvi. Around 2 PM, Tawnvi informed us that Sohana was missing. Initially, we didn’t take it seriously, but by 5 PM, we started searching for her.”
Jhikargacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nur Mohammad Gazi said, “We visited the scene upon receiving the news. The body has been sent for autopsy, and further legal steps will be taken based on the investigation.”
