Kushtia’s Rabiul Islam, Infamous for Seven Marriages, Arrested in Human Trafficking Case

Rabiul Islam, a 40-year-old man from Kushtia who gained notoriety for having seven wives, was arrested on Sunday, July 20, 2025, by the Islamic University Police Station in Khoksa Upazila, Kushtia. The arrest was made in connection with multiple human trafficking cases.

Confirming the arrest, Mehedi Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Islamic University Police Station, told on Sunday evening that Rabiul faces at least six cases related to human trafficking. He is currently being interrogated at the police station and will be presented in court on Monday.

Rabiul, a resident of Patikabari village in Kushtia Sadar Upazila, first came into the spotlight two years ago due to his seven marriages. He spent a decade in Libya, where he allegedly facilitated the trafficking of young men from his area. Even after returning to Bangladesh, he continued this activity, according to police sources. Several complaints of financial fraud and human trafficking were lodged against him, leading to six registered cases. Following these allegations, police launched operations to apprehend him. According to police, Rabiul lured young men from Kushtia, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah, and surrounding districts with promises of lucrative jobs in Libya. Once there, members of his trafficking network allegedly recorded videos of the victims in distress and sent them to their families, demanding large sums of money for their release. After multiple complaints and preliminary investigations confirmed these allegations, Rabiul was arrested. The OC stated that police will seek a remand to further interrogate Rabiul and identify other members of the trafficking ring. Efforts are underway to dismantle the entire network.
