Dr. Yunus Calls for Malaysian Investment in Bangladesh

Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged Malaysian investors to invest in Bangladesh, stating that the interim government has already taken multiple steps to make the country more business-friendly.

Speaking at a business forum on trade and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and Malaysia held in Kuala Lumpur Therapeutic on Tuesday (August 12), Dr. Yunus made this call.

He noted that business in Bangladesh has not progressed as expected in the past. However, he highlighted that the new Bangladesh is witnessing development in many sectors, with significant potential for business growth.

Dr. Yunus further stated that efforts are underway to make Bangladesh as business-friendly as possible, and he sees immense possibilities in the transformed Bangladesh. Referring to Bangladesh as a country of youth and creative people, he encouraged investors to harness the potential of young Bangladeshi expatriates spread across various countries. Speaking about expatriate Bangladeshi youth, he said they always have a strong desire to contribute to Bangladesh. These details were shared by Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar, quoting the Chief Adviser. At the start of the event, Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of BIDA and BEZA, delivered a presentation highlighting Bangladesh’s competitive advantages for investors and elaborating on the interim government’s initiatives to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers. Vivek Sood, CEO and Managing Director of Axiata Group, the majority shareholder of the cellular operator Robi, also gave a presentation, showcasing Axiata’s 28 years of growth and successful partnership in Bangladesh. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of Petronas; Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Managing Director of sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional; top executives from palm oil companies Sime Darby Plantations, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK), IOI Corporation, and Felda Global Ventures (FGV); Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of Proton Holdings Berhad; and Lim Wee Chai, Executive Chairman of glove manufacturer Top Glove Corporation. Prior to this business gathering, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday in Putrajaya between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
