Tangail, April 26, 2025: A tragic incident has shocked the community in Sakhhipur, Tangail, where the body of a newlywed woman, Riya Akter (19), was found hanging in her home just two days after her marriage. The incident occurred on Friday, April 25, in the Kalidas Thakaniapara area, and her body was recovered by the police.
According to police and local sources, Riya Akter, the wife of Nirab Miya (27), a Saudi expatriate, had developed a romantic relationship with him over the phone about six months ago. Nirab, a resident of Kalidas Thakaniapara, returned to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia on April 16 and stayed at Riya’s home in Kalukhali, Rajbari. The couple married on April 23 in a family ceremony and returned to Sakhhipur. On Friday afternoon, after bidding farewell to her father, Riya was alone in her room. When family members noticed the door locked from the inside and received no response to their calls, they broke through a fence to enter the room and discovered Riya’s body hanging.
The police were informed, and the body was sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for an autopsy on Friday night. Sub-Inspector (SI) Tamjid Momen Tanay of Sakhhipur Police Station stated, “Initial investigations suggest it was a suicide. The body was sent for autopsy, and it was handed over to the family around 3 PM on Saturday after the procedure.” An unnatural death case has been filed at the Sakhhipur Police Station.
The incident has left the community in mourning, with many questioning the circumstances that led to such a tragic outcome so soon after the couple’s marriage.
