Chattogram: The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has launched a major crackdown on illegally operating battery-powered rickshaws. Over the past two days, thousands of these vehicles have been seized from various parts of the city.
According to the CMP, many of these rickshaws operate without proper braking systems, posing a high risk of accidents. Additionally, unskilled drivers—including minors—have been found operating these vehicles.
The crackdown intensified after a tragic incident last Friday when a six-month-old child lost their life after a battery-powered rickshaw fell into a drain near Kapasgola. Authorities are conducting extensive operations in areas such as Chandgaon, Baklia, Bayezid, Khulshi, Kotwali, and Akbar Shah.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Mahmuda Begum stated that the High Court has declared battery-powered rickshaws illegal. However, due to limited storage facilities, most seized rickshaws are being fined and released. While rickshaw drivers have demanded formal regulations, no official government decision has been made yet.
