Democracy Remains Unsecured in Bangladesh After 53 Years: Ali Riaz

Dhaka, May 4, 2025 :Professor Ali Riaz, co-chair of the National Consensus Commission, stated that democratic institutions have failed to take root in Bangladesh over the past 53 years.

He highlighted that repeated attempts to undermine democracy have succeeded, leaving the nation’s democratic framework vulnerable and repeatedly destabilized.

Speaking at a discussion with the Bangladesh Socialist Party at the L.D. Hall of the Parliament Building on Sunday (May 4), Professor Riaz emphasized the significance of last year’s July-August uprising as a manifestation of the country’s long-standing democratic struggles. “The July-August uprising reflects the democratic movements of the past 53 years. We cannot let these struggles go in vain,” he said. He stressed the commission’s goal to draft a national charter to build an accountable state for a future Bangladesh.
The discussion was attended by commission members Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, and Monir Haider, special assistant to the chief adviser.
A seven-member delegation from the Bangladesh Socialist Party, led by its executive president Abdul Ali, participated in the talks. The delegation included general secretary Advocate Babul Molla, along with Mojibur Rahman, Rubel Shikdar, Fakhruddin Riyad, Rajib Ahmed, Mizanur Rahman, and Abdur Razzak.
Professor Riaz underscored the need for compromise among all stakeholders to forge national consensus, warning that without collective effort, the democratic aspirations of the nation could falter.
