31 May, 2025 : In a gruesome murder case stemming from an extramarital affair, a Dhaka court has sentenced two individuals, Maksuda Akter alias Hasina (37) and Md. Salauddin (39), to death for the 2018 killing of kabiraj (traditional healer) Mofizur Rahman, alias Mofiz Kabiraj, in Keraniganj, Dhaka.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday, May 29, 2025, by Dhaka’s Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge Israt Jahan Munni. The convicts, who are related as devar (brother-in-law) and bhabi (sister-in-law), were ordered to be executed by hanging.
On February 2, 2018, police recovered Mofiz’s dismembered body—missing hands, legs, and head—from a ditch in front of the Biuta graveyard in Keraniganj’s Taranagar Union. A case was filed by Sub-Inspector SM Mehedi Hasan of Keraniganj Model Police Station against unidentified persons. Investigations revealed that the murder was motivated by an illicit relationship between Maksuda and Salauddin.
On September 21, 2018, the investigating officer, Md. Nazmul Hasan, Inspector of Dhaka South Detective Police, submitted a charge sheet against three individuals. During the trial, 19 witnesses testified, and DNA testing confirmed the identity of the victim’s mutilated body. The prosecution’s lawyer, Robiul Islam, stated that the convicts had disposed of the body in a fish farm to be consumed by magur fish. He expressed satisfaction with the verdict, calling the crime “heinous and shocking.”
Both convicts are currently absconding, and an arrest warrant has been issued against them. Another accused, Nazrul Islam, was discharged from the case due to his death.
