Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin Faces Social Media Attacks Amidst Claims of Misleading Foreign Ministry

Dhaka, May 17, 2025 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, particularly Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin, has come under intense scrutiny and relentless social media attacks recently, with the motives behind the criticism remaining unclear.

Despite these challenges, Jashim Uddin has been lauded for his steady leadership during a period of national upheaval following a popular uprising and a change in government.

Amidst widespread institutional instability, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained its composure and functionality, largely due to the disciplined leadership of Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain and Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin. Their efforts ensured Bangladesh’s diplomatic corps continued to safeguard the nation’s interests globally. The interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, gained international recognition and support through quiet diplomacy and strategic coordination with global partners.
A career diplomat since joining the Foreign Service in 1994 through the 13th BCS batch, Jashim Uddin has served in key postings, including Washington D.C., New Delhi, Tokyo, Islamabad, and ambassadorial roles in China, Qatar, Greece, Malta, and Armenia. Known for his thoughtful and principled approach, he has prioritized impactful work over personal recognition.
During his tenure as Ambassador to Greece, the Bangladesh Embassy was named the 'Best Mission of the Year' for initiatives such as regularizing undocumented Bangladeshi migrants, launching online Bangla language courses, promoting Bangladeshi culture, and improving consular services through automation. In Qatar, he facilitated the establishment of a Bangladesh Open University branch, providing educational opportunities for expatriate workers.
Despite his achievements, Jashim Uddin faced criticism for receiving the "Janoprosashon Padak" from the former Prime Minister, though the award recognized the collective efforts of the mission. Reports also suggest that his potential removal from office may be linked to his opposition to a proposed humanitarian corridor at the Bangladesh border, highlighting his commitment to national interests amid rising regional tensions, particularly between India and Pakistan.
As civil service morale remains fragile, the removal of an experienced leader like Jashim Uddin could have significant consequences for Bangladesh’s foreign policy and diplomatic stability.
