Cumilla, May 15, 2025: Mirza Abbas, a member of BNP’s standing committee, has claimed that Tk 90,000 crore has been laundered from the country in the last eight months.
He alleged that during the Awami League’s regime, thousands of crores of taka were siphoned off, and the trend has continued under the interim government. Abbas further accused government affiliates of being involved in extortion.
Speaking at a membership form distribution event for BNP’s Cumilla division at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Thursday, Abbas said, “Previously, our only enemy was the Awami League, but now we have many adversaries. However, we do not care about them.” He clarified that BNP has not yet come to power, and the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, remains abroad. He urged party members not to engage in activities that could tarnish the party’s image.
Abbas also pointed out that some opportunists are using BNP’s name to engage in extortion and land grabbing, which is bringing disrepute to the party. He called on party activists to remain vigilant and hand over those involved in such illegal activities to law enforcement. Criticizing the state of media freedom, he remarked that the media lacked independence during the Awami League’s tenure, and the situation remains unchanged under the current government.
The event featured speeches by Cumilla divisional BNP organizing secretary Principal Mohammad Selim Bhuiyan, co-organizing secretary Mostak Mia, BNP chairperson’s advisor Amin-ur Rashid Yasin, Cumilla south district BNP convener Zakaria Taher Sumon, Cumilla metropolitan BNP president Uttbatul Bari Abu, and others.
