Giant Pangas Fish from Padma River Sold for 40,000 Taka in Rajbari

Rajbari, May 6, 2025: A massive pangas fish, weighing 22 kilograms, was caught in the Padma River at Daulatdia, Goalanda, Rajbari. The fish was netted by fisherman Rafiq Haldar from Jafarganj, Manikganj, on Tuesday afternoon (May 6).

Rafiq Haldar contacted fish trader Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh at Daulatdia ferry ghat to sell the catch. Sheikh purchased the fish at Tk 1,700 per kilogram, totaling Tk 37,400. The fish was brought to Sheikh’s fish depot at Daulatdia’s No. 5 ferry ghat, attracting a large crowd of curious locals and fish traders. The rare sight of such a large pangas fish created significant excitement in the area.
Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh, the buyer, shared, “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a large pangas from the Padma. The fish was extremely fresh, so I bought it at a good price.” He later sold the fish to a wealthy Dhaka-based businessman for Tk 39,600, earning a profit of Tk 2,200.
District Fisheries Officer Md. Nazmul Huda noted that large fish of various species are increasingly being caught in the Padma, bringing joy to fishermen who are selling them at good prices.
