Israel Calls Up Thousands of Reserve Soldiers for Ground Offensive in Gaza

International Desk, May 4, 2025: Israel has summoned thousands of reserve soldiers to launch a ground offensive in the besieged Gaza Strip, escalating its military operations against the Palestinian armed group Hamas.

The announcement was made by the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lt. Gen. Ayal Zamir, on Sunday, May 4.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting calls for a ceasefire agreement to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Despite international pressure to negotiate, Netanyahu has vowed to continue the war, prompting the mobilization of reserve forces.
The conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in devastating losses. According to reports, approximately 55,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces during this period. Many hostages taken by Hamas have also died, with most of those released so far freed during brief ceasefire periods. However, Israel has repeatedly refused proposals for a new truce with Hamas.
In a statement regarding the mobilization, Lt. Gen. Zamir said, "This week, we are issuing draft orders to thousands of our reserve soldiers to intensify and expand our operations in Gaza. We are increasing pressure to bring back our hostages and defeat Hamas. Our forces will operate in more areas of Gaza, targeting and destroying all Hamas infrastructure, both above and below ground."
The escalation raises concerns about further civilian casualties and the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as the region braces for intensified military operations.
