Low-Lying Areas of Kalapara Flooded Due to Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal

Patuakhali,.29 May, 2025 : The low-lying coastal areas of Kalapara in Patuakhali have been inundated due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, causing significant distress to residents.

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds since Thursday morning (May 29, 2025) have damaged several temporary structures outside the embankments, disrupting the daily lives of workers and laborers. Many businesses remained closed, and students were unable to attend educational institutions due to the adverse weather.

According to the meteorological office, 98 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in just six hours from 6 AM to 12 PM. The low-pressure system has caused river water levels to rise by 4 to 5 feet above normal, flooding low-lying areas including Nilganj, Lalua, and Champapur, as well as roads adjacent to rivers in the town.
Lalua Union Parishad Chairman Tapan Biswas reported that several areas outside the embankments in his union have been flooded. Additionally, unplanned construction has led to waterlogging issues in some government project houses, exacerbating residents' woes.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has maintained a No. 3 cautionary signal for Payra and other maritime ports, advising all vessels to navigate with caution. Md. Asaduzzaman, Assistant Director of the Kalapara Cyclone Preparedness Program, stated that the low-pressure system was located 245 kilometers from Payra port at 6 AM and has since moved closer.
Abdul Jabbar, an official at the Khepupara Weather Station, reported that 143.3 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours, with 98 millimeters occurring between morning and noon. The maximum wind speed recorded was 46 kilometers per hour at 11:30 AM, the highest in the current season.
