NBR Announces Full-Scale Work Stoppage Over Four Demands

Dhaka, May 24, 2025 – The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Reform Unity Council has declared the continuation of its pen-down strike due to the government's failure to provide a clear commitment to fulfilling four specific demands. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the NBR headquarters in Dhaka on Saturday.

Present at the conference were Additional Commissioner Edip Billah, Deputy Tax Commissioner Md. Mostafizur Rahman, and Assistant Tax Commissioner Md. Ishtiaque Hossain. The council stated that starting May 25, a complete work stoppage will be observed in all income tax, customs, and VAT offices, except for customs houses and LC stations. At customs houses and LC stations, the strike will be observed from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, export activities and international passenger services will remain unaffected.
The council called on all levels of officials and employees from Dhaka’s tax, customs, and VAT offices to gather at the NBR premises starting at 9 AM on Sunday. A press briefing is scheduled for 4 PM on the same day at the NBR premises.
From May 26 (Monday), the full-scale work stoppage will extend to all income tax, customs, and VAT offices, except for international passenger services. The council remains firm on its demands, despite welcoming a statement from the Finance Ministry, and has rejected calls to resume work, citing assurances of ordinance amendments as insufficient.
