Primary School Teachers Suspend Month-Long Work Stoppage

29 May 2025 : Assistant teachers of government primary schools in Bangladesh have suspended their ongoing full-day work stoppage for one month, following assurances of progress on their three-point demands.

The decision was made after visible advancements and positive commitments from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, according to Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, convener of the Assistant Teachers’ Unity Council, which comprises six teacher organizations.

The announcement came after a meeting with Professor Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, advisor to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, held at the Secretariat on Thursday (May 29, 2025). The meeting, which lasted from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM, focused on the teachers’ demands: full implementation of promotions, provision of higher grades based on years of service, and the introduction of the 11th grade for assistant teachers.
Officials from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Directorate of Primary Education, and the Ministry of Finance attended the meeting. They informed the teachers that the promotion process is in its final stages, and efforts are underway to resolve issues related to granting higher grades for teachers with 10 and 16 years of service. Additionally, a proposal to implement the 11th grade for assistant teachers is under process and will be finalized soon through an inter-ministerial meeting with the Finance Ministry.
The ministry urged the teachers to return to classrooms, assuring them that their demands are justified and being addressed sincerely. In response, the teachers’ council announced the suspension of their agitation until June 25. However, they warned that if significant progress is not made by the deadline, they will resume their work stoppage and launch stricter programs.
The meeting was attended by 13 teacher representatives from various districts, including Dhaka, Madaripur, Keraniganj, Noakhali, Khulna, Sylhet, Barisal, and Jessore.
