06 June, 2025 : A motorcycle-riding couple, Anwar (30) and Sharmin, were killed in a tragic road accident on the Bogura-Rangpur highway in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, on Thursday (June 5) around 9:30 PM at Chapariganj. Enraged by the incident, locals blocked the highway for about an hour.
Anwar, son of Yusuf Ali, was a resident of Kathgiri village in Shilkhuri Union, Bhurungamari Upazila, Kurigram. The couple, who worked in the garment industry in Dhaka, was returning to their hometown in Kurigram. According to locals, their motorcycle collided with a rubber road divider on the western side of the highway between Chapariganj and Fasitola, causing them to be thrown off. A truck following behind ran them over, resulting in their immediate deaths. While locals seized the truck involved, the driver and his assistant fled the scene.
Following the accident, locals blocked approximately one kilometer of the highway from Fasitola to Chapariganj, demanding the removal of the rubber road divider. Army personnel, local police, and highway police arrived at the scene, reassured the protesters, and restored normal traffic flow. Local resident Hafiz Miah stated, “This road divider has caused 4-5 accidents before. This time, both husband and wife lost their lives. We demand its immediate removal, or more lives will be lost.”
Gobindaganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mozaffar Hossain confirmed that the bodies are being held at the station and the truck has been seized. Although the driver and his assistant remain at large, legal proceedings are ongoin.
