Dhaka and 13 Other Districts Brace for Severe Storms Tonight, BMD Issues Alert




Dhaka, May 26, 2025: The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned that Dhaka and 13 other districts may experience gusty winds with speeds of 45-60 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms, tonight. The forecast, issued for inland river ports, is valid from 2 PM to 1 AM on Monday, May 26.
In a bulletin signed by meteorologist Md. Shahinul Islam, the BMD stated that the districts of Tangail, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Jessore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar may experience temporary gusty or stormy winds from the west/northwest, along with rain or thunderstorms. River ports in these areas have been instructed to hoist cautionary signal number 1.
Additionally, the BMD has forecasted that the country may experience moderate to heavy rainfall or thunderstorms with gusty winds for five consecutive days this week. A 120-hour forecast, signed by meteorologist Shahanaz Sultana, notes that the southwest monsoon has advanced up to the Chattogram division, with favorable conditions for further progression. A low-pressure system may form over the north Bay of Bengal by Tuesday, May 27.

  • Monday (May 26): Many areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, and some areas in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chattogram divisions, may see light to moderate thunderstorms with gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet. Day temperatures are likely to remain unchanged, with a slight decrease in night temperatures.
  • Tuesday (May 27): Rainfall is expected to be more prominent in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, with light to moderate thunderstorms in some areas of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, and Chattogram. Temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged.
  • Wednesday (May 28): Increased rainfall is expected in Khulna, Barisal, and Chattogram divisions. Day temperatures in southern regions may drop by 1-3°C, while night temperatures may slightly decrease nationwide.
  • Thursday and Friday (May 29-30): Most parts of the country may experience light to moderate thunderstorms with gusty winds, with moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas. Temperatures may slightly decrease.
The BMD further stated that thunderstorm activity may decrease over the next five days, with temperatures likely to rise. Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant.
