Dhaka, May 26, 2025: Leaders and activists of the Dhaka University (DU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), staged a sit-in protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Monday, demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Samy, the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, and a secure campus environment.
The protest began around 12 PM at Hakim Chattar, led by DU Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon. The demonstrators marched in a procession and took a position in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, continuing their program until 2 PM.
Shahriar Alam Samy, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and the Literary and Publication Secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal, was fatally stabbed by miscreants in Suhrawardy Udyan on the night of May 13.
During the protest, Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos stated, “Samy was a frontline fighter in the mass uprising. Thirteen days have passed since his murder, yet no justice has been served. The current DU administration has repeatedly failed. Over the past nine months, we have witnessed incidents like the murder of Tofazzal, the burning of fascist motifs, and bodies hanging from trees, yet the administration has failed to apprehend or punish the culprits. We demand the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, as well as exemplary punishment for those creating misleading narratives about Samy’s murder.”
Nahiduzzaman Shipon, General Secretary of DU Chhatra Dal, echoed the demand for the immediate resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, stating, “The administration has failed to ensure the safety of students on campus. We want a secure campus and accountability for those responsible.”
The Dhaka University authorities have formed an investigation committee to probe Samy’s murder, and the committee has reportedly submitted its report.
