Dhaka, June 1, 2025: On Monday, June 2, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed will present the national budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, marking Bangladesh’s 54th national budget and the first under the interim government led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The budget will be broadcast simultaneously at 3:00 PM through state-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) and various private media outlets.
According to sources in the Finance Ministry, the proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year is set at Tk 7.90 lakh crore, a reduction of Tk 7,000 crore compared to the current 2024-25 fiscal year’s budget of Tk 7.97 lakh crore. This marks the first time since independence that the budget size will be smaller than the previous year’s. Finance Division officials have stated that this decision was made to ensure the budget is “implementable,” citing challenges in revenue collection and a decline in foreign loans and grants.
The upcoming budget will prioritize controlling inflation, creating employment opportunities, improving living standards, and allocating additional resources to health, education, and social safety nets. The budget deficit is estimated at Tk 2.26 lakh crore, with plans to finance more than half of it through foreign sources and the remainder through domestic borrowing from banks and savings certificates.
