Bandarban’s Lama Upazila Closes 60 Tourist Resorts Amid Landslide Concerns

01 june, 2025 : The Lama Upazila administration in Bandarban has ordered the closure of 60 tourist resorts due to heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides. The decision was made following an emergency disaster management meeting at the Lama Upazila Executive Officer’s office on Sunday (June 1, 2025) afternoon.

Lama Upazila Executive Officer Md. Moin Uddin stated that heavy rainfall is affecting the hilly areas, and the weather office has forecasted continued rain for the coming days. As most resorts are located on hillsides, they are at risk of landslides. To ensure tourist safety and prevent loss of life, the resorts have been ordered to remain closed. He noted that they will reopen once the rainfall subsides and the landslide risk is mitigated.
Sanatan Kumar Mandal, officer-in-charge of the Bandarban Weather Office, reported that the southwest monsoon has caused heavy rainfall (88 mm) and potential landslides in Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Chattogram from Saturday (May 31) evening to the next 24 hours. In the past 24 hours, ending at 3:00 PM on Sunday, Bandarban recorded 87 mm of rainfall.
Arup Chakraborty, Executive Engineer of the Bandarban Water Development Board, stated that water levels in the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali rivers have risen due to heavy rainfall but remain below the danger level.
District Administrator Shamim Ara Rini said that 220 temporary shelters have been established across the district’s seven upazilas to manage the disaster. A “Disaster Emergency Service Committee” has been formed, including the administration, Fire Service, police, health department, volunteer organizations, and NGOs. Residents in high-risk areas at the foothills are being alerted through public announcements to evacuate to safe shelters.
