Dhaka, June 4, 2025: Faruk-e-Azam, Advisor to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, has stated that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with the four national leaders—Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Md. Monsur Ali, and AHM Kamruzzaman—are to be recognized as freedom fighters. He made these remarks on Wednesday (June 4) while responding to journalists’ questions at the Secretariat.
Faruk-e-Azam further clarified that all members of the Mujibnagar Government will also be considered freedom fighters. Those who participated in the armed struggle and those who led the efforts during the Liberation War will be recognized as freedom fighters. However, officials and employees of the Mujibnagar Government will be regarded as associate freedom fighters. He emphasized that individuals associated with the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and diplomats will also be recognized as associate freedom fighters, adding that this designation does not diminish their honor.
The advisor noted that despite the clear definition of "Bir Muktijoddha" (valiant freedom fighter) outlined in the amended ordinance of the National Freedom Fighters’ Council (JAMUKA), controversies are being unnecessarily stirred. He said, “The definition of freedom fighters established in 1972 was implemented. It was revised in 2018 and 2022. The honor, dignity, and benefits for both freedom fighters and associate freedom fighters will remain the same.” He further stated, “Without the collective effort in the Liberation War, we could not have achieved independence. The Liberation War is the most glorious chapter in our nation’s history.”
Earlier, on Tuesday (June 3) at around 11 PM, the National Freedom Fighters’ Council Ordinance was published in the form of a gazette.
