Strict Legal Measures Warned for Irregularities in Eid-ul-Adha Animal Markets

Dhaka, June 1, 2025: In preparation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued stringent guidelines to maintain order in animal markets. During a coordination meeting held on Sunday morning at DMP Headquarters, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali NDC announced that strict legal actions will be taken against those who load or unload sacrificial animals indiscriminately, disrupt traffic, or forcibly compel traders to sell animals.

He further stated that market leaseholders are prohibited from collecting any fees beyond the government-prescribed rates. Forcing animal-carrying vehicles to enter markets or setting up markets outside the City Corporation’s designated boundaries is strictly forbidden. Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar urged the public to report any issues to the national emergency service number 999 and to preserve evidence, such as videos. He also warned against setting up markets on roads, causing public inconvenience, or mistreating traffic police personnel.
Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam emphasized that legal action will be taken against those spreading rumors or creating artificial shortages to destabilize the sacrificial animal market. The meeting addressed security measures for animal markets, the collection, preservation, and marketing of raw hides, and overall traffic management in Dhaka.
The meeting saw participation from representatives of intelligence agencies, City Corporations, Fire Service, Bangladesh Bank, the Directorate of Livestock, the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, the Bangladesh Tanners Association, and leaseholders of Dhaka’s animal markets. Joint Police Commissioner Mohammad Shahidullah presented a comprehensive security and traffic management plan through a PowerPoint presentation. Open discussions followed, where stakeholders shared valuable feedback, suggestions, and concerns.
